# skyrocketing how-can-i-help popcon count

[**how-can-i-help**](http://packages.debian.org/sid/how-can-i-help) by Lucas
Nussbaum is one of the best things that happened in the field of **attracting
contributions to Debian** in quite a while.

how-can-i-help is great for **newbies** who are looking for a way to give back
to Debian based on their abilities — among other things, how-can-i-help shows
new [bugs tagged "gift"](https://wiki.debian.org/qa.debian.org/GiftTag) on
packages you use.  But how-can-i-help is also great for **experienced
developers**, as it allows them to find out, in a timely manner, that packages
they use is in dire need of help: RC bug fixing, adoption, sponsoring, etc.

If you haven't installed it yet, please do so RIGHT NOW. It's as easy as:

    apt-get install how-can-i-help

I think we should aim at **installing how-can-i-help by default** on all Debian
machines, but that might be an ambitious goal in terms of dependencies. In the
meantime, I'll settle for making how-can-i-help's **popcon count**
skyrocket. As of today, it looks like this:

[[!img how-can-i-help-popcon-20141002.png
  link="http://qa.debian.org/popcon.php?package=how-can-i-help"
  alt="how-can-i-help popularity contest graph, 10/02/2014"]]

which is definitely too low. Please **spread the word** about how-can-i-help,
and we'll see what happens to that graph!

how-can-i-help is just a tiny teeny helper, but I'm convinced it could do
wonder in unleashing currently dormant contributions to the Debian Project.
